China’s position in trade with the West

In the past

During the past 30 years large parts of the world’s production have been relocated to countries being able to produce at favourable conditions and adhere to international quality standards. China stood in the front row, partly because of its favourable manufacturing conditions, partly – and increasingly important – because of its huge domestic market and demand for products. The consequence was an enormous expansion of industrial capacity and an increased volume of trade with Western countries.

At present

China’s macroeconomic objectives gradually change: More focus on domestic demand, less dependency on foreign customers and suppliers. Reciprocal protectionist tendencies and restrictions of specific product groups reflect today’s tricky situation. Due to geopolitical shifts and newly emerging ties, several countries or economic areas are in the process of re-aligning their foreign policy. Germany for instance encourages its private companies to rethink their lopsided dependence on China, may it be related to the import of semiconductors or rare earths for car batteries. On the one hand, a well-established customer-supplier relationship is maintained, on the other hand, the multiple warnings cannot be ignored. As a result, many players are driving on sight.

In the future

A significant part of the success will depend on the clear commitment to tackle future problems together on a global level. In case international relations mainly stay friendly, there is a chance to walk a structurally changed growth path of mutual benefit.

Does China sound hard to master?

We call the situation dynamic, challenging and sometimes difficult to understand. You should better be on the spot to recognize the technological innovations and regulatory changes that could affect your business as a buyer or manufacturer of goods.

No reason to worry, but stay alert and better check twice. Let ICS Engineering Services be your valuable partner right on site. And if necessary, not only in China.
Countries like Vietnam, Indonesia or Malaysia are clearly on the rise and in the process of taking over business from China.
